Hair loss has been treated in many different ways over the years. As our understanding of the reasons for hair loss has improved, restoration options have become more sophisticated.
The methods used to address it have ranged from using a simple cap or hat to cover any balding spots, to detailed surgical procedures. There is even research to develop hair cloning technology that will one day become the leading treatment to combat hair loss. Products are also available to treat it such as shampoos and concealers. These are mostly recommended for hair loss in its earlier stages. Drugs are often taken as the hair loss progresses. The Food and Drug Administration have approved medication in the form of minoxidil and finasteride for public use. Another popular medication used alongside finasteride is spironolactone. It does not have the approval of the FDA though it has been known to be effective.
What is FUE surgery?
Hair transplant surgery is a popular choice for those that want to effectively treat their hair loss condition. There are two well-known procedures to treat it. One is through the follicular unit transplantation (FUT) method. It is where the surgeon makes an incision on the back of a patient’s scalp to extract a thin strip of skin containing healthy hair follicles which is to be divided in grafts. These are to be implanted unto the recipient area of the scalp where balding is most progressive. The other form of hair surgery is the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method. This is also known as the “direct extraction” method and is a more advanced version of an FUT procedure. The surgeon no longer has to make an incision on the back of the patient’s head. Instead, he harvests the hair follicles from the healthy donor area unit by unit, to be implanted directly unto the balding area of the scalp. This process is more time consuming than an FUT operation and repetition of FUE is more likely, however the results are generally regarded as being superior.
